場所 vs 所
JLPT N5 vocabulary · what is the difference?
場所 is a physical place or the space something occupies — a spot you can point to on a map. 所 (ところ) covers that too but is much broader: it also means an aspect or point about a person or thing, as in いい所, a good point. When you mean a concrete location, either works and 場所 is the safer choice; when you mean something abstract, only 所 will do.
When to use each
場所
ばしょ
Use 場所 for a definite physical location — where an event is held, where you will meet — and for space in the sense of room. It is the word you want when someone asks where exactly.
会議の場所を教えてください。
かいぎのばしょをおしえてください。
Please tell me the location of the meeting.
この机は場所を取りますね。
このつくえはばしょをとりますね。
This desk takes up a lot of space, doesn't it?
所
ところ
Use 所 for a place in a looser sense — 静かな所, 住んでいる所 — and for a non-physical point or part: 彼のいい所 is a good quality of his, not a spot. Read ところ, it also carries a long list of grammar patterns, which is a separate topic from the noun.
静かな所に住みたいです。
しずかなところにすみたいです。
I want to live somewhere quiet.
彼女のいい所は明るい所です。
かのじょのいいところはあかるいところです。
The good thing about her is how cheerful she is.
Sentences where only one works
待ち合わせの場所はどこですか。
まちあわせのばしょはどこですか。
Where is the meeting spot?
A specific point to stand at, so 場所. 所 would sound vague, more like what sort of area.
この計画には分からない所があります。
このけいかくにはわからないところがあります。
There are parts of this plan I don't understand.
Parts of a plan are not physical, so 場所 is impossible here.
車を止める場所がありません。
くるまをとめるばしょがありません。
There's nowhere to park the car.
Space for something — 場所's core use. 所 is possible but less precise about the physical room.
彼のそういう所が好きです。
かれのそういうところがすきです。
That's the side of him I like.
An aspect of a person, which only 所 can express.
Common mistakes
彼のいい場所は優しい場所です。
彼のいい所は優しい所です。
場所 only means a physical location, so this reads as though the man owns good real estate. A good point about someone is always 所.
この所に名前を書いてください。
この場所に名前を書いてください。
Pointing at a precise spot on a form calls for 場所. この所 is not ungrammatical but is not how anyone says it.
Frequently asked questions
Is 所 always written in kanji?
Often not. As a plain place noun the kanji 所 is common, but when it works as a grammar word — 食べたところ, 〜するところだ — it is normally written in kana as ところ.
Can I just use 場所 for everything?
For concrete locations, nearly always yes, and it will sound natural. But you cannot use it for aspects or points about a person or thing, and it does not appear in the ところ grammar patterns.
Do they read the same?
No. 場所 is ばしょ and 所 on its own is ところ. The same kanji is read しょ or じょ inside compounds like 事務所 and 近所.
