新しい vs 新た
JLPT N5 vocabulary · what is the difference?
新しい is the everyday word for new and is what you need in almost every sentence. 新た is a written-register な-adjective used in phrases like 新たな課題 and 新たに始める; it means newly arisen or renewed rather than newly bought.
When to use each
新しい
あたらしい
Use 新しい for anything new in ordinary speech and writing: new shoes, a new car, a new friend, a new job. If you are unsure which to use, this is the right answer.
新しい靴を買いました。
あたらしいくつをかいました。
I bought new shoes.
この車は新しいです。
このくるまはあたらしいです。
This car is new.
新た
あらた
A written, formal word taking な before nouns and に as an adverb. It describes something newly arising or renewed — 新たな問題, 新たな課題, 決意を新たにする — rather than a new physical object.
新たな問題が起きました。
あらたなもんだいがおきました。
A new problem has come up.
決意を新たにしました。
けついをあらたにしました。
I renewed my resolve.
Sentences where only one works
新しいかばんが欲しいです。
あたらしいかばんがほしいです。
I want a new bag.
An ordinary object you buy takes 新しい. 新たなかばん would be odd and stiff.
会社は新たな計画を発表しました。
かいしゃはあらたなけいかくをはっぴょうしました。
The company announced a new plan.
Formal announcement language, and the plan newly arises — 新た fits the register.
新たに三人が加わりました。
あらたにさんにんがくわわりました。
Three more people newly joined.
For "newly, in addition", 新たに is the natural adverb; 新しく would not carry the "in addition" sense here.
新しい友だちができました。
あたらしいともだちができました。
I made a new friend.
Everyday personal news — 新しい. 新たな友だち sounds like a press release.
Common mistakes
新たい車
新しい車
新た is not an い-adjective. There is no 新たい — the two words simply have different endings.
新た問題
新たな問題
新た is a な-adjective, so it needs な before a noun.
新たなくつを買いました。
新しいくつを買いました。
Grammatically fine but wrong register. For buying shoes, nobody says 新た.
Frequently asked questions
Do I really need 新た?
Not for speaking. You need to recognise it in news, business writing and essays, where 新たな〜 is common. For producing sentences, 新しい covers almost everything.
Is 新たに the same as 新しく?
They overlap. 新たに leans towards "newly, afresh, in addition" and is more formal; 新しく is the everyday adverb. 新しく買った is natural speech, while 新たに追加された is written style.
Can 新た describe an object?
Rarely and awkwardly. It prefers abstract nouns — 課題, 問題, 局面, 展開, 決意. For a physical thing, use 新しい.
