開く vs 開ける

JLPT N5 vocabulary · what is the difference?

開く (あく) means something opens by itself and takes が: ドアが開きます. 開ける (あける) means a person opens something, and that thing takes を: ドアを開けます. Both are "open" in English, so let the particle decide — が goes with the intransitive 開く, を with the transitive 開ける.

When to use each

開く

あく

Use 開く when the thing simply opens — an automatic door, a shop opening for business, a window that stands open. The thing that opens takes が, and no person is mentioned.

  • ドアが開きました。

    ドアがあきました。

    The door opened.

  • この店は九時に開きます。

    このみせはくじにあきます。

    This shop opens at nine.

開ける

あける

Use 開ける when someone opens something on purpose. The thing opened takes を. Requests such as "please open the window" are always 開ける.

  • 窓を開けてください。

    まどをあけてください。

    Please open the window.

  • 暑いですから、ドアを開けました。

    あついですから、ドアをあけました。

It was hot, so I opened the door.

Sentences where only one works

  • ドアが開きます。

    ドアがあきます。

    The door opens.

The door is the が subject and opens on its own — an automatic door, or the wind.

  • ドアを開けます。

    ドアをあけます。

    I open the door.

Identical event, but を means someone is doing it, which forces 開ける.

  • 窓が開いています。

    まどがあいています。

    The window is open.

〜が開いている describes the resulting state. Use this when you just mean the window is open now.

  • 窓を開けてあります。

    まどをあけてあります。

The window has been left open on purpose.

Transitive 開ける plus てある says someone opened it and left it that way, which 開いています does not imply.

Common mistakes

  • 窓を開きます。 (meaning "I open the window")

    窓を開けます。

あく never takes an を object, so with を you must use 開ける. The same kanji read ひらく is a different verb that can take an object, as in 本を開く.

  • ドアが開けました。

    ドアが開きました。

With が the door opened by itself, so the verb must be 開く. If you opened it, change the particle too: ドアを開けました。

  • 店は九時に開けます。 (meaning "the shop opens at nine")

    店は九時に開きます。

Opening hours describe the shop opening, with no doer — that is 開く. 店を開ける means the owner unlocks the shop.

Frequently asked questions

Can I say 窓が開けています?

No. Mixing が with the transitive 開ける is ungrammatical. Say 窓が開いています for "the window is open", or 窓を開けています for "I am opening the window".

Isn't 開く sometimes read ひらく?

Yes, and that is a separate verb which can be transitive: 本を開く, 会を開く. At N5 level, learn あく as the intransitive partner of 開ける and treat ひらく as its own word.

Does the same rule cover 閉まる and 閉める?

Yes, and 入る/入れる and 集まる/集める too. The intransitive one takes が, the transitive one takes を. Learning one pair properly teaches you all of them.
