JLPT N4 vocabulary · what is the difference?

ぜひ expresses your own strong wish or a warm invitation — ぜひ来てください means "I'd really love you to come". 必ず expresses certainty or obligation — 必ず来てください means "be sure to come, no excuses". Swapping them changes how you sound: invite a guest with 必ず and you have given them an order.

When to use each

Use ぜひ with requests, invitations and your own desires: ぜひ〜てください, ぜひ〜たい, ぜひお願いします. It never states a fact about the future, so it does not go with plain predictions like "it will definitely rain".

Please do come and visit sometime.

I'd really love to live in Japan one day.

Make sure you hand it in by tomorrow.

I'll contact you without fail when I arrive.

If you practise, you'll definitely get better.

A confident statement about a fact. ぜひ cannot appear here at all, because there is no wish or request.

I'd really like to hear your opinion.

Asking a favour politely — ぜひ signals that this is your wish, not their duty.

Common mistakes

(inviting a friend)

必ず makes attendance a requirement. Learners who look up "without fail" pick 必ず and unintentionally order their guests around.

ぜひ only attaches to wishes and requests. A statement about what will happen needs 必ず, or きっと for a confident guess.

Promising you will attend is a commitment, so 必ず. ぜひ has to sit with a desire form such as 〜たい.

Frequently asked questions

The opposite — it is the warm, welcoming way to invite someone, and it is standard in shops, emails and everyday speech. 必ず来てください is the one that can sound harsh to a guest.

What is the difference between 必ず and きっと?

必ず states objective certainty or a requirement; きっと is the speaker's confident guess (きっと来ますよ — I'm sure he'll come). If you are promising something yourself, use 必ず.

Can I answer an invitation with ぜひ on its own?

Yes. ぜひ or ぜひお願いします is a natural, enthusiastic "yes, I'd love to".
