汚れる vs 汚す

JLPT N4 vocabulary · what is the difference?

汚れる is intransitive — something gets dirty (シャツが汚れた). 汚す is transitive — someone makes it dirty (シャツを汚した). Both are verbs about becoming dirty; the word learners mix in is 汚い (きたない), an adjective that simply describes something as dirty.

When to use each

汚れる

よごれる

Use 汚れる for something getting dirty with nobody to blame, and for the resulting state: 汚れている means it is dirty now. As a modifier, 汚れた皿 means a dirty plate.

  • 手が汚れています。

    てがよごれています。

    My hands are dirty.

  • 雨の日に歩いたので、靴が汚れました。

    あめのひにあるいたので、くつがよごれました。

I walked in the rain, so my shoes got dirty.

汚す

よごす

Use 汚す when a person is the cause: spilling on the floor, staining your clothes. It takes を, and it is what you use when apologising for a mess you made.

  • 床を汚さないでください。

    ゆかをよごさないでください。

    Please don't dirty the floor.

  • コーヒーをこぼして、服を汚してしまいました。

    コーヒーをこぼして、ふくをよごしてしまいました。

I spilled coffee and got my clothes dirty.

Sentences where only one works

  • 子どもが壁を汚しました。

    こどもがかべをよごしました。

The child got the wall dirty.

The child is the cause, so 汚す with を.

  • 長く使ったので、壁が汚れています。

    ながくつかったので、かべがよごれています。

The wall has got dirty from long use.

No one did it, so 汚れる with が.

  • このトイレは汚いです。

    このトイレはきたないです。

    This toilet is dirty.

汚い is an adjective describing how it is. 汚れています also works here and sounds more neutral, less like a complaint.

  • 汚れた服を洗濯機に入れてください。

    よごれたふくをせんたくきにいれてください。

Please put the dirty clothes in the washing machine.

汚れた as a modifier means "which got dirty". 汚い服 is possible but sounds blunter and more judgemental.

Common mistakes

  • 手が汚いています。

    手が汚れています。

汚い is an adjective, so it cannot take ています. Use 汚れています, or plain 手が汚いです。

  • 服を汚れてしまいました。

    服を汚してしまいました。

汚れる cannot take を. If you caused it, the verb is 汚す.

  • すみません、床が汚れました。

    すみません、床を汚してしまいました。

When you are apologising for your own spill, the intransitive sounds like you are dodging responsibility, as if the floor got dirty by itself.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between 汚い and 汚れている?

汚い is an adjective and a judgement — it can mean unclean, messy, or even unfair (汚いやり方). 汚れている simply reports that something has got dirty, and sounds more neutral and polite about someone else's things.

Why are 汚れる and 汚い written with the same kanji?

They share the meaning "dirty", but the readings are completely different: よご for the verbs, きたな for the adjective. You have to learn them separately.

Can I say 手を汚す about myself?

Yes, literally (手を汚さないように気をつけてください) and also as an idiom meaning to do the dirty work yourself, much like the English phrase.
