割れる vs 割る
JLPT N4 vocabulary · what is the difference?
割れる is intransitive — it broke (コップが割れた). 割る is transitive — someone broke it (コップを割った). What picks 割 over 切る, 折る and 破る is the material: 割 is for hard, brittle things that come apart in pieces — glass, china, eggs.
When to use each
割れる
われる
Use 割れる for something brittle coming apart on its own: a glass, a plate, a window, an egg. It takes が. It also has a common figurative use, 意見が割れる, meaning opinions are split.

落としたら、お皿が割れてしまいました。
おとしたら、おさらがわれてしまいました。

割る
わる

Frequently asked questions
割れる, 切れる, 折れる, 破れる — which do I use?
It depends on the material. 割れる: hard and brittle (glass, china, eggs). 切れる: something long parting in two (rope, thread, a phone line). 折れる: something long and stiff snapping (a branch, a pencil, a bone). 破れる: flat and thin tearing (paper, cloth, a bag).
Can I say 意見が割る?
No. Split opinions are always 意見が割れる. The transitive 割る is not used that way in ordinary Japanese.
Which one do I use for an egg?
割る when you crack it on purpose (卵を割る), and 割れる if one breaks in the bag (卵が割れた).
