育つ vs 育てる
JLPT N4 vocabulary · what is the difference?
育つ is what a child, animal or plant does — it grows up (田舎で育つ, to grow up in the countryside); 育てる is what the parent or gardener does — raise it or grow it (子供を育てる, 野菜を育てる). Use 育つ of yourself when you say where you were raised, and 育てる when someone else is doing the raising.

Use 育つ of the one who grows: a child, a puppy, a tree, a young player. It takes が, and the place of upbringing takes で.
私は田舎で育ちました。
わたしはいなかでそだちました。
I grew up in the countryside.
この木は大きく育ちました。
このきはおおきくそだちました。
This tree has grown big.
育てる
そだてる
Use 育てる of the one doing the raising: parents bringing up a child, a gardener growing vegetables, a company training new staff. It takes を.
庭で野菜を育てています。
にわでやさいをそだてています。
I grow vegetables in the garden.
両親は私を大切に育ててくれました。
りょうしんはわたしをたいせつにそだててくれました。
My parents raised me with great care.
Sentences where only one works
この野菜は北海道で育ちました。
このやさいはほっかいどうでそだちました。
These vegetables were grown in Hokkaido.
The vegetables are the subject doing the growing, so 育つ. 育てました would name the farmer as the one who grew them.
子供を三人育てました。
こどもをさんにんそだてました。
I raised three children.
The parent is the actor and 子供 the object, so 育てる. 子供が育ちました means the children grew up.
花が咲きました。
はながさきました。
The flowers bloomed.
育つ is about growing larger over time, not about opening; flowers blooming take 咲く.
Common mistakes
私は東京で育てました。
私は東京で育ちました。
You are the one who grew up, so the intransitive 育つ. 育てました would mean you raised someone in Tokyo.
犬が育てています。
犬を育てています。
育てる takes を for what is being raised. 犬が育っています means the dog is growing up.
背が育ちました。
背が伸びました。
育つ describes a whole living thing maturing, not a measurement rising. Height uses 伸びる.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use 育てる for plants as well as children?
Yes. 野菜を育てる and 子供を育てる are both completely standard; the verb covers nurturing anything living, and by extension training people, as in 新人を育てる.
What is the difference between 育つ and 大きくなる?
大きくなる only says something got bigger. 育つ carries the sense of developing properly over time under some care, which is why it suits children, animals and crops.
How do I say where I was born and raised?
東京で生まれて育ちました, or the set phrase 生まれも育ちも東京です.
