治る vs 治す
JLPT N4 vocabulary · what is the difference?
治る is intransitive: an illness, cold or wound gets better, marked with が (風邪が治った). 治す is transitive: someone cures or heals it, marked with を (医者が病気を治す, 早く風邪を治したい).
When to use each
治る
なおる
Use 治る when the condition itself improves and no one is named as curing it. The illness, cold, wound or pain takes が, and the patient, if mentioned, takes は.
風邪はもうすっかり治りました。
かぜはもうすっかりなおりました。
My cold has completely cleared up.
この傷は一週間で治ると思います。
このきずはいっしゅうかんでなおるとおもいます。
I think this wound will heal in a week.
治す
なおす
Use 治す when someone acts to cure it — a doctor treating a patient, or you deliberately getting yourself over something. The illness takes を.
その病院で病気を治してもらいました。
そのびょういんでびょうきをなおしてもらいました。
I had my illness treated at that hospital.
今日はよく寝て、風邪を治します。
きょうはよくねて、かぜをなおします。
I'll sleep well today and get over this cold.
Sentences where only one works
薬を飲んだら、頭痛が治りました。
くすりをのんだら、ずつうがなおりました。
I took medicine and my headache went away.
The headache improved; the medicine is not the grammatical doer, so 治る with が.
医者が母の病気を治してくれました。
いしゃがははのびょうきをなおしてくれました。
The doctor cured my mother's illness.
A named curer acting on the illness — 治す with を.
早く治るといいですね。
はやくなおるといいですね。
I hope you get better soon.
The standard get-well phrase, always 治る. お大事に often follows it.
Common mistakes
風邪を治りました。
風邪が治りました。/風邪を治しました。
治る never takes を. Use が if it cleared up on its own, を治す if you actively worked at getting over it.
エアコンが治りました。
エアコンが直りました。
Machines, cars and broken things use 直る and 直す. 治る is for bodies. Both are read なおる, which is why this slips through.
Frequently asked questions
治る and 直る sound identical — how do I choose?
治 is for health: illness, colds, wounds, pain. 直 is for things and states: a broken appliance, a typo, a bad habit. The same split applies to the transitive 治す and 直す. We have a separate page comparing 直す and 治す if you want the details.
Can a person be the subject of 治る?
It is more natural to make the illness the subject: 彼は風邪が治った, "his cold got better." You do hear 彼はもう治った about a person, but the illness-as-subject version is the safe pattern.
Is 怪我を治す correct, since I can't cure my own injury?
Yes — it means treating it or getting it healed through your own effort, e.g. 怪我を治してから練習に戻ります. If you just mean it healed, use 怪我が治る.
