回る vs 回す
JLPT N4 vocabulary · what is the difference?
回る is intransitive: something spins or goes around by itself (地球が回る), or a person goes around from place to place (町を回る). 回す is transitive: you turn something with your hand, or pass it along (ハンドルを回す, 書類を回す).
When to use each
回る
まわる
Use 回る when the thing rotates or travels around without anyone turning it, or when a person tours several places. The subject takes が; places toured take を.
扇風機が静かに回っています。
せんぷうきがしずかにまわっています。
The fan is turning quietly.
午後は取引先を回ります。
ごごはとりひきさきをまわります。
I'll be going around to clients this afternoon.
回す
まわす
Use 回す when someone turns something by hand, or hands an item on to the next person. The thing turned or passed takes を.
このつまみを右に回すと、音が大きくなります。
このつまみをみぎにまわすと、おとがおおきくなります。
If you turn this knob to the right, the volume goes up.
このプリントを後ろの人に回してください。
このプリントをうしろのひとにまわしてください。

Sentences where only one works
鍵を回したのに、ドアが開きません。
かぎをまわしたのに、ドアがあきません。
I turned the key but the door won't open.
I did the turning, so 回す with を.
洗濯機がまだ回っています。

The drum turns by itself once switched on — 回る.

Touring places uses 回る; the を marks the route, not an object.

回る cannot take an object. Anything you turn with your hand — handle, knob, key, dial — is 回す.

Going around town is 回る. 町を回す suggests you spun the town itself.
Frequently asked questions
町を回る takes を, so isn't 回る transitive?
No — that is the movement を, marking the area you travel through, like 道を歩く. You can tell because there is no doer acting on the town, only someone moving around it.
What does 手を回す mean?
Figuratively, to pull strings or make arrangements behind the scenes. Literally moving your arms in a circle would normally be 腕を回す.
Is 見て回る one word?
It is a compound of 見る and 回る: "go around looking", used for browsing a shop or sightseeing. Other verbs combine with 回る the same way, e.g. 探し回る, "search all over".
