JLPT N4 vocabulary · what is the difference?

きっと is the speaker's own conviction about something out of their control — a confident guess, usually with でしょう or と思う. 必ず is objective inevitability or a commitment: what always happens, what a rule requires, or what you promise to do without fail. So a weather prediction is きっと晴れる, while an instruction is 必ず来てください.

When to use each

きっと

きっと

Use きっと for predictions, inferences and reassurance about things you do not control. It pairs with でしょう, だろう, はずだ and と思う, and belongs mostly to conversation.

I am sure he will come.

Don't worry, it will be fine.

Use 必ず for what is guaranteed: rules, instructions, habits without exception, and promises about your own actions. It is the word in manuals, signs and business email.

Please be sure to lock up before you go out.

I will contact you by tomorrow without fail.

Sentences where only one works

It will surely be sunny tomorrow.

Weather is a guess, however confident. 必ず晴れる would claim sunshine is guaranteed, which a speaker cannot assert.

Be sure to take the medicine after meals.

An instruction. きっと飲んでください does not work, because きっと describes belief rather than what someone must do.

Water always boils at one hundred degrees.

An exceptionless fact, so 必ず. きっと would turn a physical law into the speaker's hunch.

There is no reply, but he must be busy.

Inferring a reason from evidence is exactly きっと's job; 必ず cannot express inference at all.

Common mistakes

必ず asserts certainty, so it fights with でしょう, which hedges. A guess takes きっと.

You cannot ask someone to be confident. Requests and rules take 必ず.

必ずしも is used only with a negative, meaning "not necessarily", as in 必ずしも安いとは限らない.

Frequently asked questions

Which do I write in an email to my boss?

必ず, when you are promising an action: 必ず本日中に提出します. きっと would make your own commitment sound like a guess about yourself.

Isn't きっと来てね something people say?

Yes, and it is fine — that is pleading rather than instructing, closer to "do come, I'm counting on it". For a real requirement, still use

Which one is stronger?

必ず, because it claims certainty about the world. きっと can sound very confident, but it stays the speaker's own belief.
