集める vs 拾う

集める means bringing many things or people together into one place on purpose, and 拾う means picking something up off the ground with your hand. You 集める stamps as a collection over years; you 拾う a wallet you happen to find on the street.
When to use each

Use 集める when several things or people are brought together into one place — a collection, money for a gift, students in a classroom, information for a report.
レポートのために資料を集めています。

拾う
ひろう
Use 拾う for the physical action of lifting something off the ground or floor. The thing is usually one item, and often you did not expect to find it.
公園でごみを拾いました。
こうえんでごみをひろいました。
I picked up litter in the park.
落ちた鉛筆を拾ってくれませんか。
おちたえんぴつをひろってくれませんか。
Could you pick up the pencil that fell?
Sentences where only one works
道で財布を拾いました。

One object, off the ground, by chance — 拾う. 財布を集める would mean you collect wallets as a hobby.
切手を集めています。
きってをあつめています。
I collect stamps.
A deliberate collection built up over time, which 拾う cannot express.
みんなでごみを拾って、一か所に集めました。
みんなでごみをひろって、いっかしょにあつめました。
We picked up the litter and gathered it in one place.
The two verbs sit side by side: 拾う is each lifting action, 集める is bringing it all together.

An idiom: flagging down a passing taxi is 拾う, because you take what happens to come by.
Common mistakes
道でごみを集めました。
道でごみを拾いました。
English 'pick up litter' and 'collect litter' are both natural, but in Japanese the bending-down action is 拾う. 集める describes the pile you end up with, not the picking.
切手を拾っています。
切手を集めています。
A hobby collection is 集める. 切手を拾う would mean you literally found stamps lying on the ground.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use both in the same sentence?
Yes, and it is common: ごみを拾って集める — pick the pieces up one by one, then gather them together. They describe different stages, not competing choices.
Does 拾う always mean finding something by accident?
Not always. Volunteer litter-picking is planned, and it is still 拾う, because the verb describes lifting something from the ground. The 'by chance' feeling comes mostly with things like 財布を拾う.
Why is catching a taxi タクシーを拾う?
It is a set expression for hailing a taxi on the street. It is not used for taxis booked by phone or app, which take 呼ぶ.
