集まる vs 集める

JLPT N4 vocabulary · what is the difference?

集まる (あつまる) means people or things come together by themselves and takes が: 人が集まる. 集める (あつめる) means someone brings them together or collects them, and they take を: 切手を集める. It is the standard intransitive/transitive pair — が for the event on its own, を when there is a doer.

When to use each

集まる

あつまる

Use 集まる when people or things come together on their own — a crowd forming, donations coming in, friends meeting up. The ones gathering take が and the place takes に.

  • 駅前に人がたくさん集まっています。

    えきまえにひとがたくさんあつまっています。

A lot of people are gathered in front of the station.

  • 土曜日の十時に公園に集まりましょう。

    どようびのじゅうじにこうえんにあつまりましょう。

Let's meet up at the park at ten on Saturday.

集める

あつめる

Use 集める when a person gathers or collects things or people. What is collected takes を. This is the verb for hobbies like collecting stamps and for calling people together.

  • 子どものときから切手を集めています。

    こどものときからきってをあつめています。

I have collected stamps since I was a child.

  • 先生が学生を教室に集めました。

    せんせいががくせいをきょうしつにあつめました。

The teacher gathered the students in the classroom.

Sentences where only one works

  • 教室に学生が集まりました。

    きょうしつにがくせいがあつまりました。

The students gathered in the classroom.

学生 takes が — they came of their own accord.

  • 先生が学生を教室に集めました。

    せんせいががくせいをきょうしつにあつめました。

The teacher gathered the students in the classroom.

Same event from the teacher's side: 学生 now takes を and 先生 is the が subject, so the verb is 集める.

  • お金がたくさん集まりました。

    おかねがたくさんあつまりました。

A lot of money came in.

Reporting the result without naming who ran the collection — が forces 集まる.

  • みんなでお金を集めましょう。

    みんなでおかねをあつめましょう。

    Let's collect money together.

Here we are the collectors, so お金 takes を and only 集める works.

Common mistakes

  • 切手を集まっています。

    切手を集めています。

切手 takes を, so the verb must be the transitive 集める. Collecting is something you do to the stamps.

  • 人を集まりました。

    人が集まりました。 / 人を集めました。

集まる cannot take を. Decide whether the people came on their own (が集まる) or you called them together (を集める).

  • 三時に集めましょう。 (meaning "let's meet at three")

    三時に集まりましょう。

When you and your friends come together, nobody is being collected, so it is 集まる. 集めましょう would mean "let's gather some things up".

Frequently asked questions

Which one do I use to tell friends where to meet?

集まる: 駅に集まりましょう。You are all coming together yourselves, so nobody takes を. Only an organiser gathering other people would say 集める.

How do I say "my collection"?

Use 集めている plus the thing: 集めている切手 for the stamps you collect, or 切手集め for stamp collecting. The noun 集まり, from 集まる, means a get-together.

Is this the same pattern as 決まる/決める?

Yes. 集まる, 決まる and 閉まる all take が and describe things happening; 集める, 決める and 閉める all take を and have a doer. The 〜まる / 〜める shape is a very common pairing.
