Strategy notes: read these before the passage

  • Diaries are written in plain form (〜た、〜だった). Do not be thrown by the lack of です/ます.
  • 〜と思っていたが (I had thought, but...) signals that reality was different. The contrast is usually tested.
  • Passive 言われた means the writer RECEIVED the instruction. The teacher is the one speaking.

Passage

四月十日(日)くもり

今日は初めて料理教室(りょうりきょうしつ)に行った。駅前のビルの三階で、先生は五十歳ぐらいの女の人だった。生徒(せいと)は八人で、私のほかに外国人が二人いた。

作ったのはカレーとサラダ。カレーは家で何回も作ったことがあるから簡単だと思っていたが、先生に「玉ねぎ(たまねぎ)はもっとゆっくり炒(いた)めなさい」と三回も言われた。ゆっくり炒めた玉ねぎは甘くなって、いつもより本当においしかった。

隣(となり)の席のブラジル人のルーカスさんと友だちになった。来月も一緒に行く約束(やくそく)をした。少し疲(つか)れたけど、いい一日だった。
