Lesson 9 of 110

〜と (conditional) "when / whenever / if"

to (jouken)

By Nihongo PathUpdated

Meaning

Natural, automatic or inevitable results: "whenever A happens, B happens". Also for discoveries (〜と、〜があった).

〜と links a cause and an automatic result: "whenever A happens, B always happens". このボタンを押すと、お湯が出ます = when you press this button, hot water comes out. Because the result is natural or automatic, you cannot put your own wishes, requests or commands after と. In the past tense, と describes a discovery: 家に帰ると、誰もいなかった (when I got home, nobody was there).

Explaining how machines work, giving directions (角を曲がると銀行があります), describing seasons and nature (春になると桜が咲く), general truths (二に三を足すと五になる), habits, and story-like discoveries in the past tense.

Formation

V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.

  • V-dictionary + と / V-ない + と: 押すと, 行かないと
  • い-adjective + と: 高いと
  • な-adjective + だと / Noun + だと: 静かだと, 雨だと
  • Main clause: a natural result or a discovery (past), never a request, command, invitation or intention

Common mistakes

  • ✗
    駅に着くと、電話してください。
    ✓
    駅に着いたら、電話してください。
    Why
The result clause after と cannot be a request or command. Use たら.
  • ✗
    暇だと、映画を見に行きましょう。
    ✓
    暇だったら、映画を見に行きましょう。
    Why
Invitations (〜ましょう) are not allowed after と.
  • ✗
    雨と、試合は中止です。
    ✓
    雨だと、試合は中止です。
    Why
    Nouns and な-adjectives need だ before と.

と is the natural choice for directions and instructions: まっすぐ行くと、右に郵便局があります. In the past tense (〜と、〜た) the main clause is something the speaker discovered or that happened right after, not something the speaker chose to do. 〜ないと (casual) at the end of a sentence means "I have to" (もう行かないと = I've got to go), a shortening of 〜ないといけない (lesson 99).

JLPT N4 tips

On the exam

  • If the second half is a request (〜てください), an invitation (〜ましょう) or a wish (〜たい), と is wrong. Eliminate it immediately and look at たら or なら.
  • If the sentence describes a machine, nature or a discovery with past tense (〜と、〜があった / いた), と is the best answer.
