破れる vs 破る

JLPT N3 vocabulary · what is the difference?

破れる is intransitive — something flat and thin tears on its own (ズボンが破れた). 破る is transitive — someone tears it (手紙を破る). 破 is the breakage verb for paper, cloth and bags, and 破る alone extends to breaking a promise or a rule.

When to use each

破れる

やぶれる

Use 破れる for paper, cloth or a bag tearing without anyone meaning to. It takes が. It has no "break a promise" sense — that belongs only to the transitive side.

  • ズボンが破れてしまいました。

    ズボンがやぶれてしまいました。

    My trousers got torn.

  • 袋が破れて、中の物が落ちました。

    ふくろがやぶれて、なかのものがおちました。

The bag tore and the things inside fell out.

破る

やぶる

Use 破る when someone tears something on purpose (手紙を破る) and, by extension, when someone breaks something abstract that was meant to hold: 約束を破る, 規則を破る, and 記録を破る for breaking a record.

  • 手紙を読んでから破って捨てました。

    てがみをよんでからやぶってすてました。

I read the letter, then tore it up and threw it away.

  • 約束を破ってはいけません。

    やくそくをやぶってはいけません。

You must not break a promise.

Sentences where only one works

  • ポケットが破れています。

    ポケットがやぶれています。

    The pocket is torn.

It wore through on its own, so 破れる with が.

  • 間違えたので、書いた紙を破りました。

    まちがえたので、かいたかみをやぶりました。

I made a mistake, so I tore up the paper I'd written on.

A deliberate act, so 破る with を.

  • 彼は約束を破りました。

    かれはやくそくをやぶりました。

    He broke his promise.

Only 破る has this sense. 約束が破れました is not how you say a promise was broken.

  • コップが割れました。

    コップがわれました。

    The glass broke.

Glass is brittle, so it shatters: 割れる. 破れる needs something flat and thin that can tear.

Common mistakes

  • 約束が破れました。

    約束を破りました。

Breaking a promise is something a person does, so it needs 破る. 破れる is only about physical tearing.

  • シャツを破れました。

    シャツが破れました。

破れる cannot take を. If you tore the shirt yourself on purpose, say シャツを破りました。

  • 本が破りました。

    本が破れました。

With が the verb must be intransitive. 破る needs a person as the subject and を on the thing torn.

Frequently asked questions

破れる or 割れる — which is "broke"?

It depends on the material. Flat, thin things tear: 破れる (paper, cloth, a bag). Hard, brittle things shatter: 割れる (glass, china). Long stiff things snap: 折れる. Long flexible things part: 切れる.

Why does 破る mean "break a promise"?

The image is tearing through something that was supposed to hold you — a promise, a rule, a record. English does the same thing with "break". The intransitive 破れる does not carry this sense.

Is 破れる the same as 敗れる?

They are both やぶれる but written with different kanji. 敗れる means to be defeated in a match or contest; 破れる is physical tearing.
