嬉しい vs 幸せ

JLPT N3 vocabulary · what is the difference?

嬉しい is a burst of gladness caused by something that just happened — you got a letter, you passed the test. 幸せ is a lasting state of being happy with your life. 嬉しい is normally about how you yourself feel right now, so for other people you say 嬉しそう; 幸せ can be said about others freely, as in 幸せな家族.

When to use each

嬉しい

うれしい

Use 嬉しい for your own immediate reaction to a specific event or piece of news. It normally has a cause, often marked with 〜て or 〜から. About someone else, use 嬉しそう rather than plain 嬉しい.

  • 手紙をもらって嬉しかったです。

    てがみをもらってうれしかったです。

I was glad to get your letter.

  • 試験に合格して、とても嬉しいです。

    しけんにごうかくして、とてもうれしいです。

I passed the exam, so I'm really pleased.

幸せ

しあわせ

Use 幸せ for a settled condition of happiness — a life, a marriage, a family, or how you feel about your situation overall. It is a な-adjective and also a noun, so 幸せな人生 and 幸せになる are both normal.

  • 家族と一緒にいて幸せです。

    かぞくといっしょにいてしあわせです。

I'm happy being with my family.

  • 二人は幸せな家庭を作りました。

    ふたりはしあわせなかていをつくりました。

The two of them built a happy home.

Sentences where only one works

  • プレゼントをもらって嬉しいです。

    プレゼントをもらってうれしいです。

I'm glad to have received a present.

One event, one reaction. 幸せ would overstate it, as if the present had changed your life.

  • 今の生活はとても幸せです。

    いまのせいかつはとてもしあわせです。

I'm very happy with my life at the moment.

生活 is an ongoing state, so 幸せ. 嬉しい needs a triggering event and does not sit well with 生活.

  • 子どもが嬉しそうに笑っています。

    こどもがうれしそうにわらっています。

    The child is laughing happily.

Someone else's gladness is reported as 嬉しそう, not plain 嬉しい, because you cannot state another person's inner feeling directly.

  • あの二人は幸せそうですね。

    あのふたりはしあわせそうですね。

Those two look happy, don't they.

幸せ can be said about others plainly too, as in 幸せな家族; here そう just softens it to an impression.

Common mistakes

  • 田中さんは嬉しいです。

    田中さんは嬉しそうです。

Plain 嬉しい about a third person sounds like you are reading their mind. Add そう, or report it as 嬉しいと言っていました.

  • 会えて幸せです。

    会えて嬉しいです。

Meeting someone is a single occasion, so it calls for 嬉しい. 幸せ here sounds far heavier than intended, like a declaration about your whole life.

Frequently asked questions

Can I say 幸せ about a small nice thing?

Yes, casually — 幸せ over a good cake is common, half-joking. But in ordinary writing, keep 幸せ for the lasting state and use 嬉しい for the moment.

Why does 幸せ take な and 嬉しい not?

幸せ is a noun that also works as a な-adjective: 幸せな家族, 幸せです. 嬉しい is a plain い-adjective: 嬉しい知らせ, 嬉しいです. Their grammar never mixes.

Which do I use to thank someone?

嬉しいです. For example 来てくれて嬉しいです, I'm glad you came. It reacts to what they did, which is exactly what 嬉しい is for.
