Meaning

In Japanese you cannot directly state another person's feelings with words like ほしい, 〜たい, 怖い, 寂しい. Instead you add 〜がる: "shows signs of…". 妹は新しいスマホをほしがっている "my sister wants a new phone (I can see it)". The object usually switches from が to を: 水がほしい → 水をほしがる.
Talking about other people's desires and emotions in everyday and written Japanese. 〜がっている describes the current state; 〜がる describes a habit or tendency. Also makes nouns for personality types: 寒がり, 恥ずかしがり屋.
