JLPT N1 vocabulary · what is the difference?

落ちる (おちる) means something falls by itself and takes が: 鍵が落ちました, the key fell. 落とす (おとす) means a person drops it — and in everyday speech, loses it — and it takes を: 財布を落としました, I lost my wallet. Same intransitive/transitive rule as 開く/開ける: が for the event, を when there is a doer.

When to use each

おちる

Use 落ちる when something falls, comes off or drops on its own. The thing falling takes が. It also covers failing an exam (試験に落ちる) and a stain coming out (汚れが落ちる).

A leaf fell from the tree.

Your key just fell out of your bag.

落とす

おとす

Use 落とす when a person lets something fall — and, just as commonly, when they lose it. 財布を落とした normally means "I lost my wallet", not that you watched it hit the floor. The thing takes を.

    I lost my wallet.

I dropped my phone and the screen cracked.

Sentences where only one works

    The key fell.

が — you are describing the key falling, perhaps pointing it out on the ground.

    I dropped my key.

Same key, but を makes you the one who let it go — and in everyday speech this is how you say you lost it.

The stain on the shirt won't come out.

The stain behaves on its own, so が落ちる. Compare 汚れを落とす, to get the stain out.

    Please slow the car down.

スピード takes を and the driver acts, so only 落とす works. 落ちる would merely say the speed dropped.

Common mistakes

With 落とす the thing lost takes を. 財布が落ちました is also good Japanese, but it means the wallet fell, not that you lost it.

落ちる is intransitive and takes に for the exam you failed. 試験を落とす exists but means an examiner failing a candidate.

You dropped it, so it takes を with 落とす. Note the second half correctly uses が割れる — the screen cracked by itself.

Frequently asked questions

How do I say "I lost my wallet"?

財布を落としました is the usual way. 落とす covers losing something by dropping it somewhere, which is how most things get lost. なくす is the broader word for losing something, including mislaying it at home.

Why is 汚れが落ちる "the stain comes out"?

落ちる means something comes off or away, not only downward. The stain leaves the fabric by itself, so it takes が. When you scrub it out yourself it is 汚れを落とす.

Is this the same pattern as 届く/届ける?

Yes, though the endings differ. 落ちる and 届く take が and describe what happens; 落とす and 届ける take を and add a doer. The 〜る/〜す shape, as in 落ちる/落とす and 出る/出す, is one of several pairings that follow the same rule.
