Memory tip
市街 is the built-up part of a city — the streets and blocks you can walk through — whereas 都市 is the city as an administrative or demographic unit. Don't confuse it with 郊外 (suburbs) or the near-homophone 市外 (outside the city limits), as in 市外局番 "area code".
