Long vowel mark ー (chōonpu)

In katakana, a long vowel is written with a horizontal bar ー (vertical in vertical writing). It lengthens the previous vowel by one full beat.

Do not confuse ー

Do not confuse ー with the kanji 一 (one). In horizontal text ー is always a straight horizontal line following a kana.

Small ッ (sokuon)

Small ッ doubles the following consonant and takes one full beat of silence.

At the end of a word

Small ッ can also appear at the end of a word in comics or onomatopoeia to show a sudden stop (アッ! "Ah!").

Extended katakana: foreign sounds

These combinations were created to write sounds that do not exist in native Japanese. The second kana is written small.

Notes

  1. Many words have two accepted spellings (ヴァイオリン / バイオリン). Both are read the same by native speakers; ヴ is usually pronounced as b.
  2. The letter l is always written with the R-row (ラ リ ル レ ロ): ロンドン London, ミルク milk.
  3. th becomes the サ/ス row: サンキュー thank you, スリー three.
  4. r at the end of an English syllable becomes ー: カー car (exception: ドア door has no bar).

Sound-change patterns that let you guess spellings

  1. An English final consonant gets a vowel: bus → バス, milk → ミルク, cake → ケーキ.
  2. Final -er / -or / -ar → ー: computer → コンピューター, elevator → エレベーター.
  3. -ti- / -di- → ティ / ディ in modern words (パーティー) but チ / ジ in older loans (チケット, ラジオ).
  4. Shortened compounds are extremely common: パソコン (personal computer), エアコン (air conditioner), コンビニ (convenience store), スマホ (smartphone), アニメ (animation), デパート (department store).
